‘Homegrown’ was an idea founded in 2009 by Julia Williams, formerly Dance Advisor for Cheshire County Council. Homegrown’s mission is to provide high quality Dance experiences for children and young people.

Homegrown is an umbrella term for a collective of individuals Julia Wiliams, Vicky Sheard and Alice Joynson who historically have grown up, participated in, delivered on and led Dance intensive and residential settings throughout Cheshire and beyond. Between them they lead Homegrown Youth Dance Company (HYDC), Homegrown Boys, Homegrown Young Performers (HYP) and Homegrown Junior Youth Group (JYG). The company have successfully been accepted onto Youth Dance England’s national festivals in Birmingham (2005), Manchester (2007), London (2008) and Birmingham (2010). Homegrown Youth Dance Company was formerly CYDC have become known as a flagship NW youth Dance company.

For years HYDC members have pursued careers in Dance and go onto further training. In the last four years we have had students go on to study Dance at Laban, London Contemporary Dance School, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, The Hammond, Middlesex University, Roehampton University and more. Members have also been accepted on to Centre for Advanced Training Schemes in London, Yorkshire and The Lowry. Older members of HYDC have gone on to have successful careers with companies such as CandoCo, Scottish Dance Theatre, Maresa Von Stockart, Ludus, Protein and many more.

Homegrown Youth Dance Company
This is the senior company for Homegrown, a place in this company is by audition.

HYDA
Homegrown young dance associates are the stepping stone to the senior company and includes dancers who are Year 10 and above.

Homegrown Young Performers
This is the transition company for Homegrown and is for young people who are not quite ready to have a place in the senior company.

Homegrown Boys
This company is project based, open access.

Homegrown Junior Youth Group
This group is open to children 8-13 years.

Homegrown Programme of Work
Residential courses are run throughout the year in partnership with The Conway Centre in Anglesey.

Who are we?
Julia Williams was Dance Advisor for Cheshire and founder of Homegrown Dance Theatre. She has worked for YDE, AQA as an A level examiner and as Director of the National Dance Teachers Association and currently works as a Drama teacher at The King’s School Chester. Julia oversees all aspects of Homegrown managing, evaluating, planning activities and artistic direction.

Vicky Sheard is Head of Performing Arts and PE at Eaton Bank in Congleton and was seconded Dance Advisor for Cheshire during 2009. Vicky oversees the finance and administration of Homegrown Dance Theatre, liasing with members, parents, schools and venues.

Alice Joynson has been the BTEC Dance Coordinator at Upton–by–Chester High school, leading and delivering BTEC Level 3 performing arts also delivering dance to all year groups, producing over 20 dance showcases, and also 6 musical productions.
